School Activities

Project Work

Third and Fourth class have been working diligently through their History and Geography Curriculum and have produced many projects to include : China, Italy, Irish Monasteries and Homes . Across the school , the children enjoy working independently, or in groups, on a variety of topics. They avail of online facilities and peruse the library to research their chosen topic. They can then choose to work digitally using Book Creator or Word, or they can use their artistic talents and write, draw and create a representation of what they have learned. These projects are displayed around the school for other pupils to enjoy and learn from. On occasion, they present their findings at Assembly on Fridays.

Art & Craft

All classes in this school love to do Art and Craft. Teachers are very enthusiastic and generous with their talents. Pupils experience all strands of the Art Curriculum. We are very fortunate to have a General Purpose Room where we can work alone or in groups on a particular them or topic. We display our work around the school for others to enjoy. We avail of expert visitors to the school as the opportunity arises. Before Christmas, the marvellous Marina Levitina , a Heritage in Schools Specialist , facilitated a workshop entitled “ Music & Wildflowers” which was most enjoyable for all . We have been successful in our application for the Artist in Residence Scheme later this year and we look forward to this in anticipation .

Music

We love to play sport and to play music in Kilnamona N.S.

On passing the Infant classroom , you will often hear them singing and clapping, learning through music.

The children begin to formally learn tin whistle in 1st class with Miss Daffy. They continue to play up throughout the school .

In the Senior end of the school , we have a weekly Seisiún. Many children  play a second instrument and they share their talent and we learn form each other , whilst enjoying the spirit that playing music together brings to the soul. .

We play for all our religious events and it adds greatly to the occasion. Children build confidence and musicality and love being part of a group. The Parents’s Association bring the children on the wren on St.Stephen’s Day for fundraising and to spread the music throughout the parish.

We entered Féile na hInse this year and the children really blossomed in their confidence and musicality in  the process.

Hurling

Kilnamona N.S. is synonymous with hurling and we are very fortunate to have a wonderful hurling club who do such tremendous work with the boys from a very young age.

The school has won many competitions in the past and many of our past pupils have continued to play and enjoy the game and perform at the very highest level. The younger pupils look up to the older boys, to emulate their skill and enthusiasm, and the tradition continues to be alive and well.

Camogie

There is a very strong tradition of camogie in our school. Players are encouraged to be part of a team and to continue to develop their skills and athleticism.

The local club does wonderful work with the girls from u 6 upwards. The walls of the school are adorned with the many teams who have excelled and won competitions throughout the years. The current pupils love to look at these pictures as they pass in the hallway.

Football

Boys and girls enjoy playing football and we compete in the Cumann na mBunscol competitions annually. Whilst we are more familiar with the smaller ball, the children love football and many of them play with neighbouring clubs. The skills are transferrable across many other sports and participation and enjoyment are the key aims.

Yoga

The Parent's Association very generously sponsor the Block of "Yoga with Rosie" classes every year. We are very fortunate to have the Hall  so close to the school.

The children really benefit from these classes and having walked up and down from the hall, are always very relaxed afterwards. This is incorporated into our " Wellbeing " within the school.

Basketball

This was our first year to compete in the  annual Marion Keane tournament which was hosted by  Inagh N.S. We learned a lot and really enjoyed playing with each other  and against

the neighbouring schools. There are plans afoot to erect basketball hoops in our playground so that we can continue to enjoy this game.

Swimming

Classes from 1st class upwards attend a block of 8 swimming lessons in Lahinch leisure to cover the Aquatics strand of the Physical Education Curriculum. We travel by bus and it is a very sociable outing for all the children.

Gymnastics

The children from Infants up to 2nd class have enjoyed a block of 8 gymnastics with Ennis Gymnastics coach, Megan O' Brien , in our local hall. Gymnastics is an excellent sport for children to develop their balance, discipline and co-ordination.

Athletics

In September, many pupils took part in the first round of the  Cross Country Competition event held in Lees road. Several of them then qualified and went on to win the Parish team prize for North Clare for the second consecutive time for the Parish , with neighbouring schools, Inagh N.S. and Cloonanaha N.S.

Soccer

Boys and girls play soccer at lunchtime for enjoyment.

Boys and girls competed in the F.A.I.  5-a side competition in Kilrush this year and were unlucky to lose out on goal difference to qualify for the next round.
